Dr. Phil takes aim at Wayne Bent’s Strong City

dr_phil_2Thanks to Beyond90Seconds.com reader “Claire C.” for the heads-up about tomorrow’s episode of the Dr. Phil television program, Family Cult, part 2.

According to DrPhil.com, the program includes a look at Wayne Bent’s Lord Our Righteousness Church. Last month, a jury convicted Bent on one count of second-degree sexual contact with a minor and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Bent is now serving up to ten years in a New Mexico prison (read the extensive Beyond90Seconds.com Wayne Bent archives here).

This afternoon, Beyond90Seconds.com contacted former LOR member Prudence Welch and asked if she will be appearing in the Dr. Phil program. Welch said she was not interviewed, however, she added that current LOR members Hanifa and Esther will appear in Wednesday’s episode.

The information below concerning Wednesday’s Dr. Phil show appears as currently presented on DrPhil.com (please check your local listings for the time this program will be seen in your area).

  1. I wonder when this show was taped. Esther was fasting during the show?

I’m curious as to whether or not that is going to be addressed.

  2. It’s a good question, Stephanie. Prudence Welch told me today that it’s been several weeks—if not a couple of months—since she had contact with the folks at Dr. Phil. This seemed to suggest the possibility that the program had been taped weeks ago.
The “tease” or “promo” on the Dr. Phil Web site includes a mention of going w/o food. But, as you know, there have been several fasts.
Even if it turns out the program was taped weeks ago, I hope it includes recent updates, to include; the outcome of the trial, the sentence, Bent’s decision to resume eating, and Esther’s latest fast.

  3. Dr Phil is too late. The best coverage of the LOR is, without a doubt, B90S. I’m not a fan of Dr Phil and I cringe at the thought that he did a show about this group. He will take the personal tragedy of real people and sensationalize it.

  4. I agree with David. I fear we may have been spoiled by the SUPERB coverage here on Beyond90Seconds — detailed, up to the minute facts, objectively handled with sensitivity. A rare combination that’s been greatly appreciated.

  5. Well of course we are spoiled here at Beyond 90 Seconds, as Mark’s coverage has been spectacular, and very fair without any sensationalism. However, since we have all been learning so much about this case, and probably know more than Dr. Phil does, it will be quite interesting to watch this show and judge how he handles it. I am looking forward to this, and trust me, as my family and friends know, I am not a Dr. Phil fan at all!!!

  6. The news here is by far more in depth. Dr. Phil could have done an entire hour on the LOR. So many things were not addressed. My heart goes out two the two sisters on the show.

  7. James…Hell, I worship Oprah! The woman is amazing in her success and humanity. But while I am not a fan of Dr. Phil, I see on Strong City’s webpage that Ruth has posted this comment on his show:

“It’s interesting to me how easily others can judge other people. Did Dr.Phil ever sit down and speak with Michael or get to know him? He only took a story and sensationalized it for ratings.”

I would bet that Dr. Phil would welcome the chance to have Michael, or as his representative, Jeff Bent on his show. Come on Ruth, let’s back up that protest!
