Breaking News: Barrel body identified as missing 22-year-old Winnipeg man

(July 25) In a phone interview with Friday afternoon, Constable David Higgs of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed that the body found inside a barrel pulled from the Lee River Wednesday was that of 22-year-old Chad Randall Davis.

Davis as reported missing in Winnipeg on February 10, 2008.

Special thanks to reader “Leo” for leaving a comment that the body had been identified as Chad Davis. That prompted a quick Google search which turned up nothing.  However, I called the home of George Knight (one of the men who found the body).  A person answering the phone at Knight’s home explained that Channel 5 in Winnipeg had reported the identity of the body.

“This is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever heard of in the world. I can’t get it out of my mind,” his weeping girlfriend Courtney Sych told the Free Press in a telephone interview from her Calgary residence. (Winnipeg Free Press)

Update, July 25, 8:16pm PST: New insight concerning Davis’ disappearance is found in a February 27, 2008 Global Winnipeg news story (thanks to reader “Tami” for forwarding the link):

His family told police he has never gone missing like this before and they are very worried about his safety.
Davis appears to have a troubled past: police say he is “known” to them, and court records show Davis has a number of outstanding charges for failing to comply with court orders and a drug related offense. He also has a prior conviction for assault. –Global Winnipeg

Body found in barrel floating in river

Phone interview with George Knight; the man who first saw the body.

(July 24) While the Royal Canadian Mounted Police already have quite a mystery concerning the human feet that have emerged along the shores of British Columbia, another Canadian waterway has just served-up another grisly find:  The body of a man found stuffed inside a barrel that had been floating down the Lee River northeast of Winnipeg.

According to a breaking news story in this afternoon’s Winnipeg Free Press, two neighbors noticed the barrel bobbing in the river Wednesday:

Two cottagers were horrified when they discovered the decomposing body of a man stuffed face-first inside a barrel floating in the Lee River on Wednesday morning.

George Knight, 69, was repairing his dock in Fisher’s Grove along the Lee River, about 90 kilometres northeast from Winnipeg, when he and neighbour Richard Marcotte noticed a barrel bobbing in the water between their two properties.

Knight said he and Marcotte rolled the barrel near the river’s edge and pried the lid off only to discover a man’s “rear-end” wrapped in a thick plastic sheet.

“I’m pulling this plastic out and I sort or lift it up and I see this guy’s rear-end,” Knight said, noting he also saw jeans and a brown belt inside the barrel. “I just said to Richard, ‘get out of the water!’ He jumped out of the water, and I ran up to his place and called 911.”

Mr. Knight told the newspaper that the stench from the body was “terrible” and could be smelled 50-feet away.

The RCMP says it will not confirm the story, telling the Winnipeg Free Press that authorities are waiting for the result of an autopsy.

Stay tuned…

In a phone interview with this morning, District Attorney Donald Gallegos said it’s possible the criminal case against controversial church leader Wayne Bent may not take place this year.  Pressed for a prediction, Gallegos said he feels that there is a “50/50” chance the trial will get underway in 2008.

If the Bent trial is pushed to 2009, expect a new judge to be assigned to the case.  Learn the reason why in the podcast interview with Gallegos.

While Gallegos explained that he could not discuss specifics concerning the State’s case against Wayne Bent (yes, that certainly includes evidence), he did provide several insights into the legal process, especially factors that could affect a trial date.

Gallegos stressed that the State is ready to go to trial and that the alleged victims are ready, too.

On May 20, a grand jury indicted Bent on four counts: two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor in the second degree, unclothed. And two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Prudence Welch VIDEO interview

In a 46-minute *unedited* VIDEO interview with, former member of the The Lord Our Righteousness church, Prudence Welch, speaks about today’s arrest of church leader Wayne Bent.

Welch also shares her thoughts on the 15-years she says she spent in the church.

Why did she join?

Why did she leave?

What does Welch say goes on inside the church?

Why has she been so determined in recent years to “expose the truth” about the flock of worshipers at the Strong City property in northeastern New Mexico?

Who does Welch believe will head the church while Wayne Bent (aka Michael Travesser) is in custody?

This is by far Welch’s most in-depth and detailed video interview to date

And the video is unedited.

This interview took place about three hours after police arrested Wayne Bent, charging him with three counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor.

Video on this page is Windows Media Video (wmv) and may take a minute to load.
