DA: Bent has “50/50” chance of 2008 trial date (PODCAST)

In a phone interview with Beyond90Seconds.com this morning, District Attorney Donald Gallegos said it’s possible the criminal case against controversial church leader Wayne Bent may not take place this year.  Pressed for a prediction, Gallegos said he feels that there is a “50/50” chance the trial will get underway in 2008.

If the Bent trial is pushed to 2009, expect a new judge to be assigned to the case.  Learn the reason why in the Beyond90Seconds.com podcast interview with Gallegos.

While Gallegos explained that he could not discuss specifics concerning the State’s case against Wayne Bent (yes, that certainly includes evidence), he did provide several insights into the legal process, especially factors that could affect a trial date.

Gallegos stressed that the State is ready to go to trial and that the alleged victims are ready, too.

On May 20, a grand jury indicted Bent on four counts: two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor in the second degree, unclothed. And two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Africa Beyond 90 Seconds Commentary documentary election film Guardian News Robert Mugabe Sheperd Yuda Zimbabwe

Daring undercover video from inside Zimbabwe (VIDEO)

COMMENTARY

One day after the United States celebrated Independence Day, a riveting secretly-recorded news video concerning Zimbabwe’s recent Presidential election appeared on the Internet.

The report is produced by The Guardian Newspaper in London and is found beneath the headline, Exclusive:  Secret film shows how Mugabe stole an election.

If what we see in the video is true (and I’m currently aware of no reason to believe otherwise), it must have already found the attention of several world leaders.

Daring.  Life-threatening.  Historic.

All are words that describe the significance of the exclusive footage.

The hero in this video is 36-year-old prison guard Shepherd Yuda.  We’re told Yuda’s undercover camerawork “graphically shows how Robert Mugabe’s supporters rigged Zimbabwe’s election.”

According to The Guardian:

Much of the footage was shot inside the country’s notorious jail system. Yuda, who has worked in the prison service for 13 years, was motivated by the intensifying violence directed towards the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and the murder, two months ago, of his uncle, a MDC activist.

Watch this video and see where a person ends-up after supporting the “wrong” political candidate. Find out why a woman says the simple act of coloring her fingertip purple can be a matter of life and death.

And what about the fate of Yuda, his pregnant wife and young children?

None of the video’s 10-minutes and 36-seconds are wasted as they answer the questions raised here.  All while aiming for the greater goal of provoking an international response to the alleged injustices.  Both political and humanitarian.

Certainly, this daring work is a powerful reminder that Fourth of July celebrations are about much more than fireworks.

Albuquerque American Justice Beyond 90 Seconds books documentary forensics Hossencofft Linda Henning murder mysteries New Mexico News television true crime video

“American Justice” to feature Hossencofft case Thursday

Journalist Bill Kurtis takes aim at a bizarre New Mexico murder case this week.  Kurtis, host of A&E’s American Justice, tells the story of the Girly Chew Hossencofft murder in an hour-long episode titled, “Traces in Blood.”

Because I covered this case for the better part of five years–and even wrote a book about it–I was interviewed extensively for this program.  Excerpts of my appearance can be seen here.

According to A&E’s Web site, the episode is scheduled to air twice Thursday, July 3 (10am Eastern/9am Central & 4pm Eastern/3pm Central).  Please check your local listings for details.

A&E describes “Traces in Blood” as follows:

A look at the bizarre case of Diazien Hossencofft, a con man with the ability to convince his victims of just about anything. Hossencofft persuaded Linda Henning, a former fashion designer from New Mexico, that he was something other than human, and Henning started to claim that she was his “alien queen”. We examine the relationship between the two and try to determine if it led to the murder of Diazien’s wife, Girly Chew Hossencofft.

“Traces in Blood” first aired April 7, 2004.  When I was interviewed for the program, I was taking time off from TV work and writing September Sacrifice (Kensington Publishing Corp., December 2004) while holed-up in a wonderful, old adobe home in the remote and charming town of Hillsboro, New Mexico (you can see pictures from my time in Hillsboro here).

In 1999, I published a Web site dedicated to the Hossencofft case. Little did I know back then that markhorner.com/hoss would grow into hundreds of pages of articles, pictures, documents and videos.  The site is widely regarded as an excellent Online source for information about the case.

Jamiel Shaw II’s parents speak-out in new documentary

The Los Angeles murder story that continues to fuel heated political debate concerning illegal immigration is now the focus of a new documentary produced by the alternative news source Full Disclosure Network. The documentary provides an in-depth interview with the parents of the late Jamiel Shaw II.

Police say Jamiel Shaw II, 17, was walking home and speaking with his girlfriend on a cell phone March 2 when a gang member approached him, then shot and killed him.

It’s a case Beyond90Seconds.com has closely followed from the beginning.

Investigators have charged a 19-year-old Pedro Espinoza with the murder. Espinoza, who is an illegal immigrant, had been released from jail just 28-hours prior to Shaw II’s murder.

Police do not believe the victim knew his killer. The victim’s parents believe their son was killed because he was black. In the new documentary, Shaw’s parents claim that some city leaders refuse to acknowledge this alleged motive because doing so would be politically unpopular.

The Jamiel Shaw II case has prompted one mayoral candidate to propose Jamiel’s Law, an effort to amend the Los Angeles Police Department’s Special Order 40.

Proponents of Jamiel’s Law argue that police should be allowed to make inquiries concerning an arrested person’s immigration status if that person is believed to be a gang member.

Presently, Special Order 40 dictates that “officers shall not initiate police action with the objective of discovering the alien status of a person.”

Shaw’s parents have also blasted people who’ve claimed that their son had gang ties, suggesting that the claim is part of a smear campaign aimed at dissuading voters from supporting Jamiel’s Law.

According to the Web site fulldisclosure.net, the person who produced its new documentary is Leslie Dutton. The Web site provides the following information concerning Dutton’s background:

For more than a decade, Emmy Award winning producer-host Leslie Dutton has provided an alternative news source with Full Disclosure Network®. More than mere investigative journalism, Leslie has exposed political corruption, voter fraud, malfunctioning state courts, and errant police policy where it compromised the Rule of Law.

From the judicial system to the Presidency, she has interviewed prosecutors, police chiefs, & attorneys general, pursuing government accountability in issues including Iran Contra, Watergate, Whitewater, immigration policy (See Special Order 40), border security, and its effect on the War on Terrorism.

A nearly 10-minute long excerpt of the Full Disclosure documentary recently appeared on youtube. The excerpt also appears on the Full Disclosture Web site beneath the headline, “Is LA soft on criminal alien gangs?”
