Court called back into brief session for jury question…question unknown. Deliberations resume..

Mark:

As soon as your email came down, we were in a brief session for this reason….deliberations continue…..interesting you predicted this…..

(It’s not really an uncommon development at this point in a trial.  The timing was sheer luck.)

Mark, I’m also joining in the “thank you” to you and Jeremy for the great reporting.

Also, wanted to tell you that the first thing I read on your blog when I log on is the Quote of the Day. There is always a subtle link to what you are posting and I get a good chuckle from them.

I hope this is resolved today for everyone.

Oh, and a question for Jeremy when you get a chance.
Are all the witnesses who weren’t able to be in the courtroom for the trial able to be present for the closing arguments and verdict or just the verdict? Thanks!

Bent’s attorney Sarah Montoya begins her closing arguments, alludes that state made Bent look like “weirdo” and “pervert”

    ——————-

Excuse me Sarah, the State made Bent look like a pervert and a weirdo? When one is a pervert it becomes apparent to most by their actions. The State only showed Bent for what he really is, and that would be weird and dangerous to females young and old alike.

If the jury thinks the same thing, he will be found guilty as charged, all counts.

I agree with the grooming for later…maybe even sooner than later.

This in the New Mexico Statute for Criminal sexual contact of a minor in the 2nd degree:

30-9-13. Criminal sexual contact of a minor.

    A. Criminal sexual contact of a minor is the unlawful and intentional touching of or applying force to the intimate parts of a minor or the unlawful and intentional causing of a minor to touch one’s intimate parts. For the purposes of this section, “intimate parts” means the primary genital area, groin, buttocks, anus or breast.

    B. Criminal sexual contact of a minor in the second degree consists of all criminal sexual contact of the unclothed intimate parts of a minor perpetrated:
    (1) on a child under thirteen years of age; or
    (2) on a child thirteen to eighteen years of age when:
    (a) the perpetrator is in a position of authority over the child
    and uses that authority to coerce the child to submit;
    (b) the perpetrator uses force or coercion that results in
    personal injury to the child;
    (c) the perpetrator uses force or coercion and is aided or
abetted by one or more persons; or
    (d) the perpetrator is armed with a deadly weapon.

Whoever commits criminal sexual contact of a minor in the second degree is guilty of a second degree felony for a sexual offense against a child and, notwithstanding the provisions of Section 31-18-15 NMSA 1978, shall be sentenced to a minimum term of imprisonment of three years, which shall not be suspended or deferred. The imposition of a minimum, mandatory term of imprisonment pursuant to the provisions of this subsection shall not be interpreted to preclude the imposition of sentencing enhancements pursuant to the provisions of Sections 31-18-17, 31-18-25 and 31-18-26 NMSA 1978.

Mark, as I have said before, you are indeed an “ace reporter,” but perhaps that isn’t enough of a title; maybe, “stellar journalist” would more suitable. I like you (your sincere personality is projected well on your interviews… very likable, very engaging) and I like your work ethic. You have done your homework and that is projected through your interviews and also your blog posts. That is not always the case today with journalists. And Mr. Redman is correct you are a “stellar journalist.” I have enjoyed reading here this week and believe I have found a new location on the “net,” to bookmark and keep abreast of what other stories you might be covering. Can I ask what is going to happen to Anaiah Travesser? She should also be held accountable for encouraging and grooming these minor children to have sex with Wayne. Her letter she composed, which was directed at the young girls is pretty damning.

I don’t understand why Wayne Bent is the only one here being held accountable for these crimes.

Wayne being put in jail is not going to stop other members from continuing on with the same thing.

The SC folks are complaining that this religious ceremony was blown out of proportion by the media?

Im wondering why the prosecution didnt have Prudence testify to the interactions and correspondence that went back and forth between her and Wayne and all the letters from the virgins.

I think the prosecution missed a very important point here… while the LOR is trying to downplay the sexual aspect of this religious experience… what was the point of the religious experience? Was it not to become one with God (who is Wayne according to them)? And didnt it lead up to actual physical consumations with the witnesses and other virgins? Those were religious ceremonies too that resulted in real physical sex that is renamed a consummation. All this has been downplayed but has been a central theme in Strong City as of late.

Thank you Mark for all the work you do on this site. It has been an invaluable source to keep in touch with what is going on in Strong City.

    JW December 13, 2008 at 10:52 am #

You are right on Tori , I was there in the land until 2003 and there was no downplaying the activity there. It was very much an upplay of submission or get ridiculed. The virgins / women were competing for the prize, approval from God which consummation with wayne was the crowning act. What we do know was bad enough not to think of what went on that only they know about.
The DA only knows what wayne tells her and I am sure it has been white washed to aid in the appearance of nice “law abiding” people.

I agree that it does not seem that the jury received enough background information about the goings on at Strong City to put this “religious ceremony” in its proper context. Looking at the SC folks in the courtroom, they did give the appearance of being very sweet, proper, and innocent (as they usually do). Wayne himself seemed put on a good show of naivety from what I saw. This had to have had some influence on the jury’s impressions of what went on. If they find Wayne innocent they could be kicking themselves later when they find out more about them.

Consider too what a ‘not guilty’ verdict would mean. Wayne Bent testified in court that his religious beliefs compelled him to lay naked with any female, minor or otherwise, who asks him too. If he is found not guilty, this would free him and any other religious group to continue this practice in the future. I suppose that New Mexico could tighten up the letter of the law as a result of this but then other people in truly innocent situations (especially family members) might get prosecuted and sent to jail.

As Ms Montoya said, let us hope that the jury does indeed apply “common” sense to this case.

I remember reading the SC website (around 2000 I think). One of the major themes that Wayne was hammering on at the time was that a person had to ‘die to themselves’ before they could follow God. They had to give up their own selfish desires, their own individuality, and their own will so they could, instead, do God’s will. He was pushing this theme hard and everyone seemed to be really buying into it. Why not? It seems like a worthy principle. Then he pulled a ‘bait and switch’ when he morphed himself into god. Instead of replacing their will with obedience to God, they replaced their will with obedience to Wayne.

I just have a few questions for Sam Redman.

Sam: I read quite a bit of the Legal link you have on the Strong City mirror site. I was truly amazed when I read it. I almost thought I was reading about another story. You have really put your own story on my testimony as well as Michael’s over what happened and it is nothing like what actually occurred.

Now, I would like to ask you a few questions since you seem to know so much about what happened when I went to Michael. First of all, I would like you to tell me when those documents were written that the quotes from the three panels at the top of the page are taken from? Was Anaiah’s testimony written before or after I went to Michael?

Second, I would like to ask you why, if Michael was just using me and manipulating me or grooming me and that God was not in it instructing us both, Michael did not allow me to lay naked with him everytime I asked to? Why did he only allow me to at certain times and not at others, and why was the answer double or more times “I am not free to” than “Ok, you may?”

These are the questions I have. If you don’t know the answers to these question, neither do you know what really occurred when I went to Michael. You can speculate and make things up in your imagination but that does not prove that it is fact. It is only your opinion, and even if you do give me an answer to these questions, you will still be speculating because no one but Michael or I could tell you the answers, particularly the last one.

Yes they(we at that time) might as well have thrown our bibles away at that point , apparently we weren’t reading them. And then committed to going on the “voice” (conscience?)that contradicted the bible but threw in a scripture now and then to make it look good.

  34. avatar
    Sam Redman December 13, 2008 at 5:35 pm #

    Healed,

Of course, I stated at the beginning of that document that my writings are an editorial essay. That means that they were done as opinion and are only offered in a speculative manner. Sometimes, however, speculation leads to understanding the facts. Hopefully, your interest in discussion is an indication that you might be able to look at this situation logically.

The writings of the two witnesses go back to 2000 (both of them virtually wrote a book detailing their consummation experiences with many, many pages published long before 2006). Those documents are all archived and were a part of the community’s culture. Phrasing and wording in those dated documents is consistent with the segment which was quoted. When Anaiah actually wrote what was quoted is not dated, but in your own writings, you explained that what the two witnesses said and wrote were a big part of the motivation to cause you to have the desire to lay naked. Plus, you told how you were influenced by Wayne’s presentations in the church about his recent naked experiences with Esther, Danielle and Moriah.

Wayne’s periodic refusal to a young pubescent girl, asking to lay naked from time to time could be attributed to several factors on different occasions.

First, your own writings show that you were anxious, not only to “lay naked,” but have a full sexual experience. He might have wanted to “cool your jets” a bit, because having a panting young girl naked in your bed might have been a temptation (he is a human being) he would have been unable to resist (he knew the consequences of that would be legally grave). It’s easier to say “no” when a girl still has her clothes on.

Secondly, his own sexual desires vary. A mature man doesn’t have the same insistent desires of a young girl and he also had quite a few other naked encounters (plus full intercourse with others) going on frequently to keep his own ardor subdued; quite simply he might not have felt like it at the time. Both men and women often aren’t ready at the same time… and postponement by one or the other is a common event in such situations in real life.

Thirdly, periodic refusal to a girl anxious for a sexual situation is another way to enhance a power position (it’s a control technique often utilized by the dominant person in a relationship). Your own writings indicate that various refusals or postponements made the desires even stronger.

Fourthly, those times of refusal might have been passing phases of clarity and pangs of conscience when he realized momentarily that laying naked with a young girl is just wrong.

So, there are many logical reasons for periodic refusals, none of which make the times when it was done acceptable or are they an indication that doing so was God’s instruction or will. But, I can understand your situation, because it would be quite easy for any girl to confuse normal teenage sexual feelings with the desire for spiritual love with someone you think is God.

    Sincerely,

    Sam

    Healed December 13, 2008 at 8:20 pm #

    Sam,

I have heard many people’s feelings, thoughts, and offences about Michael, but rarely have I heard anyone say God spoke to their hearts. I do understand how it is offensive in the world’s eyes for a young women to lay naked with an older man, but that does not mean it is wrong. I believe people should be free to believe and practice what God gives to them without being persecuted and attacked for it. I could understand a crime being committed if indeed people were being hurt, but Michael has never hurt anyone and all he has done has told us the Truth, loved us, and followed God’s insrtuctions to Him. It was always our choice what we would do. He never forced or coerced us to do anything. Sometimes I wonder, “Don’t people understand what following the Lamb wherever He goes, spoken of in Revelation, means?” Evidently not.

Well, it is just ok with me if you want to believe your own opinion about my experience. It is ok with me for everyone, too, but people’s opinions and offences are not the truth, and they don’t change what God gave me. They don’t change my love for Michael; my love for Michael will not change no matter what happens. I know there is no possible way I can make other people see what God has shown to me and given me to experience. I want people to understand what it is like to be really, truly loved and accepted by the Father in Heaven and to experience the healing touch of God upon the heart, but that is as far as it goes without God enlightening their hearts and giving them to experience the healing touch of God upon the heart. That is the only way they will understand my experience. It was a spiritual experience. It did involved physical imagery, but it can only be understood from the Spirit of God. Spiritual things are spiritually discerned, and the things of God are foolishness and an offence to the world.

“For the story and message of Michael is sheer absurdity and folly to those who are perishing and on their way to perdition, but to us who are being saved it is the [manifestation of] the power of God. For it is written, I will baffle and render useless and destroy the learning of the learned and the philosophy of the philosophers and the cleverness of the clever and the discernment of the discerning; I will frustrate and nullify [them] and bring [them] to nothing.” 1 Corinthians 1:18-19 (Amplified Bible)

    Healed,

For the word of the “cross” is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.
1 Corinthians 1:18-19 (New American Standard Bible)

For the story and message of the “cross” is sheer absurdity and folly to those who are perishing and on their way to perdition, but to us who are being saved it is the [manifestation of] the power of God. For it is written, I will baffle and render useless and destroy the learning of the learned and the philosophy of the philosophers and the cleverness of the clever and the discernment of the discerning; I will frustrate and nullify [them] and bring [them] to nothing.
    1 Corinthians 1:18-19 (Amplified Bible)

Both the above Bible verses are the same, the 2nd one is the translation you use from the Amplified Bible. I looked up about 20 different translations and nowhere did I find “Michael” substituted for “cross”, not even in the Amplified Bible that you quoted. Michael is NOT the cross and was not ON the Cross, Christ was. So who substituted his name for the word “cross”? Do you yourself read the Bible or just read things written by others who have changed the words to make what they say match with your belief?

You say “I want people to understand what it is like to be really, truly loved and accepted by the Father in Heaven and to experience the healing touch of God upon the heart, but that is as far as it goes without God enlightening their hearts and giving them to experience the healing touch of God upon the heart”.

Well, I want you to know that I am really truly loved and accepted by the Father and I have experienced a great deal of God’s healing touch in my long life. God continues to heal and bless me daily and my heart is full of God’s unconditional love for me.

I did nothing to receive it. It was a gift, freely given by Christ on the Cross. I could try all my life but would never reach the point where I would be pure enough to merit God’s salvation – but I don’t need to because it was a gift from God.

I don’t worship the ground he walks on because he is not physically walking on the earth. He doesn’t have to physically touch my heart, head, back, leg, etc. to heal me because He is the Almighty God. He speaks it and it is done! There is no need to lay naked with Him because He already knows my nakedness and vulnerability; physically, spiritually and emotionally. Before I was formed God knew me. He won’t forget me now.

He knows you too! He knows your happiness and your tears. He knows your successes and your struggles before you know them. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16 (New American Standard Bible)

    Healed –

Second, I would like to ask you why, if Michael was just using me and manipulating me or grooming me and that God was not in it instructing us both, Michael did not allow me to lay naked with him everytime I asked to? Why did he only allow me to at certain times and not at others, and why was the answer double or more times “I am not free to” than “Ok, you may?”

I addressed this question, as well as many others I have seen through the past few months, here:

An Open Letter to the Young Women of Strong City

I know it must seem as if all the world is against you, and no one understands. I don’t know if it is any comfort for me to say that I have similar experiences in my past, and I remember the pain. I also know that it is bearable, and I wish for you a long, healthy adulthood full of opportunities for joy and fellowship.

In all of the material I read on the Strong City site, I never read where the intent of laying naked was for healing, it was supposedly to be naked and unashamed before God. Wasnt it lying, or at least not telling the whole truth, when you and Michael claimed otherwise?

Wayne says that he was not naked with Healed, but she says he was. Did God tell someone to lie?

I just watched a video broadcast report on KRQE. Towards the end of the report the reporter says that Bent’s attorney said he wrote on a napkin what his sentence would be – “Not Guilty on all counts”. Didn’t he say that God told him he’d be convicted in an interview after the verdict?

Now I’m wondering if the reporter got it wrong or if WB is speaking out of both sides of his mouth as usual.

In regards to some of the question I have read. Tori I agree with you putting Prudence on the stand would have maid a big difference. And yes the note did say guilty on all counts. Yes if the DA would of pressented more evendence that would of helped. Ron you are right both said a different story about being in the buff and being nakid and also he said in white short underware. He also said he knew this was trouble and he knew he was going to end up there (im thinking meaning in court)But he could not deny her. Thats crazy!!!! she is a child. I think LS or Healed is just so far gone and her being 18 soon will not matter to her. We never knew about the other times she requested or if she ever layed naked with him, only the one time on July 31, 2006. When deliberating as I recall it was the touching of the breast we were to look at not so much as the laying nakid I think I brought that up in deliberations and I was corrected it was the touching of the breast It was asked that the judge explaing that count more in detail and it was denied. Being on the jury was an experience I will never remember. I pray for the girls and there parents

Mark Horners Quote of the Day
    Hit the nail dead on!

“When a stupid man is doing something he is ashamed of, he always declares that it is his duty.”
-George Bernard Shaw, Caesar and Cleopatra (1901) Act III

Healed…you are a strong willed know it all very disobediant brat! You disobeyed your parents and broke many commandments and lied on the witness stand!
One day, all too soon, you will realize that mr wayBent used you like a piece of meat, as he has many others.
I hope you seek medical treatment for the STD’s he’s given you! I don’t believe for one minute that you didn’t have sex with him…how nasty! Shame shame on you both!
10 years from now I’m going to seek you out, thats if YOU’re still around…I know I will be and hope you didn’t do something irrational and allow mr wayBent to convince you this is all YOUR fault…I hope you get loads of psychological help because you’re going to need loads of it.
When you finally wake up from this nightmare and realize how you were used and that mr wayBent is NOT god, only a mentally ill, sick narsisstic psychopath, and see that all his predictions for translations, ascending into heaven and all that horse crap…you are going to be filled with raging anger!
Your mother tried to stop you, but you thougth you knew better.
You’ve made your bed…now you’re going to have to lay in it…just hope it doesn’t include mr waybent!
If he tries to get you and your cult to all starve yourselves to death…he is ONLY using you as he’s afraid to die alone.
Don’t do it! Please! Don’t do it…stop this madness! Get out of there and don’t turn back or you WILL suffer. God is NOT in this, is only satan guiding this man. Read what YOUR bible says, NOT what he says!
Read in Revelation how Jesus will come again…he will NOT touch this earth until it is cleansed. The bible is very clear on this! Don’t let waybent take you into the grave! he’s already taken you part way there!
Turn back while you can! Many are praying for you, honestly we are!
